April 27th - Progress Reports home May 8th - Field Trip to Art Barn Sight Words: We are learning new sight words each week. Please check your child's homework calendar to see their sight words for the week. (Please see the resource tab for a list of the sight words we will learn each week). Make sure you continue to review old sight words with your child as well. Phonics: We are learning about prefixes and suffixes this week and how we can add them to a word to create a new word. Reading: The students will be looking at various non-fiction texts and identifying the main idea and key details. Writing: We are reviewing each genre of writing that we have learned this year: narrative, informational, how-to, and opinion. The students are currently working on including capitalization and punctuation in their writing. Science: The students are learning about plants- how they grow and their different parts. We are focusing on comparing what is the same and different about two plants. The students are also beginning to learn about the Statue of Liberty. Math: The students are reviewing the different math standards that we have learned this year. These include: counting, comparing numbers, addition and subtraction up to 10, word problems up to 10, positional words, composing larger shapes with small shapes, and comparing measurements. The students are practicing identifying letter sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of a word (CVC words). Reading: We are learning how to predict what will happen in a story, retelling the events, and inference using the details in the story with the book "Tops or Bottoms" by Janet Stevens. The students will also be looking at a non-fiction text and identifying the main idea and key details. Writing: We are reviewing each genre of writing that we have learned this year: narrative, informational, how-to, and opinion. The students are currently working on narrative writing. We are working on including details in our story of where we were, what we did, who was there, and how we felt. Science: The students are learning about plants- how they grow and their different parts. We are focusing on comparing what is the same and different about two plants. Math: The students are reviewing how to add and subtract numbers up to a sum of 10. We are using different strategies to add and subtract numbers: my fingers, cubes, number line, ten frames, counters, and drawing a picture. The students are also reviewing addition and subtraction word problems. We are learning more this week on how to make 10 given a number. The students are practicing identifying letter sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of a word (CVC words). Reading: We are learning how to compare and contrast character's experiences in familiar stories. The students are describing the characters traits of the boy and tree in the book "The Giving Tree" and showing them through dance. We are comparing and contrasting these character's traits through a venn diagram. Students will also be looking at the characters in "Hooray for Wodney Wat" and talking about their similarities and differences. Writing: We are continuing to learn about opinion writing and what that means. The students are practicing sharing their opinion and providing reasons for it through pictures and writing complete sentences. Social Studies: We are learning about rocks and soil; and how to describe and classify them into categories. Math: The students are finishing learning how to add and subtract numbers up to a sum of 5, sums up to 10 for an extra challenge.. (Please see the resource tab for a list of the sight words we will learn each week). Phonics: We are beginning to learn about blends and talking about words that begin with sl-. The students are practicing identifying letter sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of a word. Reading: We are learning how to create and use puppets in our reading. Students are creating puppets to show a character in a story and practicing giving them a "voice". We will then create a story with our puppets or use them to retell a story we already know. Writing: We are continuing to learn about opinion writing and what that means. The students are practicing sharing their opinion and providing reasons for it through pictures and writing. Social Studies: We are learning about some national symbols: Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the White House. The students are learning to identify these national symbols. We are also learning about Black History Month and some people who have made significant contributions to our world. Math: The students are beginning to learn how to subtract numbers up to a sum of 5, sums up to 10 for an extra challenge.. Phonics: We are continuing to learn about word families and talking about words in the -en family. The students are practicing matching and identifying rhyming words. Reading: We are looking at the book "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats. The students are practicing visualizing what the pictures in the book would look like and retelling the story from beginning to end. We are discussing connections that we can make to books (text to text, ourselves, or the world). The students will review character and setting, creating artwork to show each of these elements from the book. Writing: We are beginning to learn about opinion writing and what that means. The students are practicing sharing their opinion and providing reasons for it through pictures and writing. Social Studies: We are learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he made to our country. The students are learning about the significance of MLK day and why we take time to remember the different Dr. King made. Math: The students are beginning to learn how to add numbers up to a sum of 10. We are learning different strategies to add numbers together: my fingers, cubes, number line, ten frames, counters, and drawing a picture. Announcements:
No School Tuesday- Teacher Workday Food Drive Collections are due Thursday, November 9th Thanksgiving Feast (K)- Tuesday, November 14th Sight Words: We are learning the words good, any, read, or, did, too, have, Tuesday this week. (Please see the resource tab for a list of the sight words we will learn each week). Phonics: We are continuing to learn about word families and talking about words in the -it family. Reading: We are looking at the book "Scaredy Squirrel" by Melanie Watt. The students are practicing asking and answering questions before, during and after reading the book. We are also reviewing character and setting. The students will be learning about Veteran's day as we read a book on this holiday and discuss its importance. Writing: We are beginning to learn about How-To writing and what that means. The students are practicing telling someone the steps on how to do something through pictures and writing. Science: We are learning about Thanksgiving and the significance of this holiday. We are working to get ready for our special feast on the 14th and hope you can join us! Math: The students are beginning to learn how to compare objects/ numbers up to 10 and using the vocabulary to describe if a group is greater, less, or equal. Phonics: We are continuing to learn about word families and talking about words in the -et family. Reading: We are looking at the book "Pumpkin Circles" by George Levinson. The students are practicing sharing what they already know and what we learned after reading this non-fiction book. We are also learning how to find the main idea in a book and share the details. The students will be learning about author's purpose and how there is a reason for writing every story. Writing: We are beginning to learn about How-To writing and what that means. The students are practicing telling someone how-to brush their teeth in steps. We will also be writing stories telling how-to make s'mores. Science: We are learning about force and motion. The students are learning how to explain and show force and motion through various activities. We will also be learning about day and night, how it looks and activities you can do during both times. Math: We are continuing to learn about how to count objects up to 20 in rectangular arrays and lines. |
